Cicadas
Two species of large edible bugs that haven’t emerged together since the 1800s sing a daily hum in the background of our adventures. These red-eyed pests began leaving their molted carcasses behind in our backyard around the time of Babe’s 2nd birthday. I remember because as we were packing the car to head to the zoo, I squealed dodging one that attempted to come for my neck. While I thoroughly enjoy this soundtrack to our life, a screech of disgust is commonplace these days. Neighbors of mine have shared recipes for ingesting these things. Why? I wish I could tell you. I’d prefer to eat something a bit more emotionally supportive than emotionally distressing.
